in South Central Los Angeles, CA until the age of 17 was not a walk in the park. As a matter of fact, I got to see many people get killed, robbed, pimped and so much more. But I do believe that growing up in an environment such as that one made me a bit stronger and wiser. Obviously, a very traditional Mexican household did not allowed me to venture into bad territory.
Thank GOD for music! Pops had always wanted to be a DJ or have some sort of system that allowed us to play at parties. Being Mexican, we always had a reason to have a party. It didn't matter if someone died, we still had a reason to celebrate; thus, pops bought our first four-channel mixer from Radio Shack! I can still remember, the fader was not feather-like at all!! It seemed as if someone had dropped into the fader some lard and it harden to the degree that if you tried to scratch with it, it would move the whole set up! ;)
Music is in my blood! I have maintained the love for music flowing through my veins ever since I was in my momma's womb, and let me just tell you, it has not been an easy task with all of the junk that hip hop has brought to the scene!! I will be the first to admin though that there might a couple of hip hop songs that I might bump in my car ONCE in a blue moon, but my LOVE for HOUSE MUSIC will NEVER DIE!! House, Progressive, Trance, Drum N Bass, Jungle, Disco, Freestyle, New Wave, and pretty much anything that has a rhythm or tight beat, I can and will spin and bump until the cops get there.
Latin Flavors have had a BIG influence on my style. Living for eight years with my grandmother in Mexico had a huge impact on the flare that my taste for music has. Sonora Santanera, Sonora Matancera, Sonora Dinamita, and many many more Sonoras were always blaring on the "consola" that my dearly missed maternal grandmother had bought in Mexico. I can remember listening to Sonia Lopez with Sonora Santanera playing in the background as my uncles would come to visit and have a blast during the holidays at my grandma's house. Because of these sounds falling through my mind, I have always loved and will continue to love TRIBAL HOUSE. The sound of the Timbals and cow bells will always echo in my mind!! You will find that many of my set will have at least one tune of TRIBAL in them.
